Why doesn't freshmeat list Windows software?
Daniel Pearson in Projects - Tue, Nov 6th 2001 10:36

Many people submit information to freshmeat regarding software that only runs on the Win32 platform. Such people sometimes become confused when we reject such submissions, since they are under the impression that freshmeat will list any Open Source project. It is true that freshmeat is a big supporter of Open Source, but there are a few problems that would result if we did not limit freshmeat to software for the Unix-like platforms.

Part of the reason why freshmeat has reached its current level of success is because we have remained conscious of our target audience. freshmeat has always aimed itself at the Unix crowd, and if we were to try to shift our focus and be "all things to all people", then we would end up spreading ourselves too thinly.

Second of all, there is a limit to the amount of information that freshmeat can dish out to our readers before overloading them. If our readers suddenly had to wade through twice as much information to learn about the software that they want to use, then only unhappiness would result.

Finally, there is no real need for freshmeat to cater to the audience that seeks Free software for Windows. Fortunately for everyone, there are several excellent sites that specialize in publishing information regarding Open Source or otherwise freely available Windows programs.
